In the science fiction television show Stargate SG-1, the fictional character Cronus is a Goa'uld System Lord, and is played by actor Ron Halder. His name is believed to be based on Cronus the Titan in Greek mythology.

Background

Cronus was one of the most powerful and influental System Lords. Because of this he was also able to banish Sokar. He was also an enemy of Apophis.

One of his First Primes was Teal'c's father. He was ordered by Cronus to attempt to win a battle that couldn't be won. When Teal'c's father returned defeated, Cronus killed him by crushing the Goa'uld parasite inside him causing the parasite's blood to mix with Teal'c's father's blood, causing a slow and painful death. This is how he later attempted to kill Teal'c. After killing Teal'c's father he exiled Teal'c and his mother. Teal'c, full of hatred for Cronus, swore to train hard to become the First Prime of Apophis, the sworn enemy of Cronus.

He also once sent an Ashrak after Jolinar who, at the time, had Captain Samantha Carter as a host.

Current times

Because of his power, Cronus was sent by the System Lords to negotiate including Earth in the Asgard's Protected Planets Treaty, meaning that the Goa'uld System Lords could not attack Earth, in exchange for the Asgard allowing the Goa'uld "access to the passage of Nylor". During this time he was also confronted with Teal'c. During the negotiations however Teal'c was called into Cronus' room and then both of them were attacked by an invisible person. While Teal'c remained nearly unharmed, Cronus was critically wounded. However Carter was able to heal him with a Goa'uld healing device and he agreed that the Stargate on Earth can be kept open (it was negotiated that it should be closed as part of the agreement). It was also revealed that Nirrti was the one who attacked the System Lord. As Cronus left, with Nirrti in his custody, he told the Ta'uri that "We will not attack your world. But if you continue to use your Stargate, be warned - anyone who is caught by one of the System Lords will be shown no mercy. They will suffer greatly." ("Fair Game")

Cronus also appears in the episode "Crossroads, albeit only in a flashback on Teal'c, which he saw through his symbiote. During this vision he saw how Cronus killed his father in a very brutal way.

Cronus at last appears in the season four episode "Double Jeopardy", when he has taken over the world Juna, which was once freed by SG-1 from Heru-ur. During this time the robot duplicates of SG-1 (made in episode "Tin Man") came to this world and were quickly captured by Cronus' forces and brought before him. There he ordered Daniel Jackson to be killed but all people in the room - even Cronus - were shocked when they see that Daniel is only a robot. Cronus was then fascinated about the machines and wanted to know more of them. Later the robot Teal'c attacked Cronus during an audience and was shortly after joined by the real Teal'c - both driven by their quest to kill the Goa'uld for the death of Teal'c's father. However Cronus was able to overpower both of them and then wanted to kill the real Teal'c in the same way he killed his father but before he could do that he was shot in the back by the robot Teal'c. With Cronus dead the planet was again safe from the Goa'uld and Cronus' ship was taken over by SG-1.
