Crossing Delancey is a romantic comedy film released in 1988. It is directed by Joan Micklin Silver and is based upon a play by Susan Sandler (Sandler also wrote the screenplay). It stars Amy Irving and Peter Riegert.
Isabelle (played by Irving), is a busy manager in an upscale boutique bookstore, the type that retains a loyal clientele by booking promising new writers to give readings. She and her female friends are having problems finding their perfect mates while resolving their yuppie lifestyles and their more down-to-earth Jewish up-bringings. Isabelle's male prospects include her ex-boyfriend who only shows up when his current girlfriend kicks him out of the house and a noted author (played by Jeroen Krabbé) who beds all of his assistants and sees Isabelle as his next conquest.
While Isabelle is yearning to fit into the intellectual literary scene, she still finds time to spend with her traditional Bubbie (grandmother), portrayed by the noted actress of Yiddish theater, Reizl Bozyk. Bubbie uses a traditional Jewish matchmaker to supply a third suitor for Isabelle, Sam (played by Riegert), the man who runs the local pickle shop. At first, Isabelle rejects Sam as his low-brow profession does not fit her yearnings for a sophisticated urban lifestyle. But over time, she starts seeing this nice guy as Mr. Right.
