Culture

The famous Blue Ridge Tunnel on the railroad which runs beneath nearby Rockfish Gap was engineed by Colonel Claudius Crozet, who had crossed the Alps with Napoleon. The small town of "Wayland Crossing" was renamed "Crozet" for him in 1870.

Crozet Pizza is a hallmark of Crozet culture. Photographs of the owners' forebearers grace the walls. Travelers come from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world to visit, leaving their business cards stapled to the walls as a historical memento.

The "greater Crozet area" is also home to Hillsboro Baptist Church, a small, innovative church with the only half-day weekday Christian preschool in the area.

Crozet United Methodist Church, a diverse congregation located on Crozet Avenue in the heart of downtown, provides the community with a USDA-approved food pantry which serves Albemarle and Nelson counties and the city of Charlottesville. The food pantry distributes over 30,000 pounds of food each year.

Crozet is also the setting for author Rita Mae Brown's Mrs.Murphy series.
