Culver is a city located in Marshall County, Indiana. Also included in the city of Culver are the towns of Burr Oak, Maxinkuckee and Union. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,539. The city is well-known for its location on the shore of Lake Maxinkuckee and the Culver Academies prep school as well as the public school, the Culver Community High School.

Geography

Culver is located at 41°13'2" North, 86°25'18" West (41.217340, -86.421726)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,539 people, 655 households, and 410 families residing in the town. The population density was 761.8/km² (1,961.7/mi²). There were 932 housing units at an average density of 461.3/km² (1,188.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.04% White, 0.91% African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 2.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 655 households out of which 26.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 23.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,047, and the median income for a family was $46,190. Males had a median income of $34,583 versus $24,453 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,938. 10.4% of the population and 8.5% of families were below the poverty line. 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
