The David Dunlap Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by University of Toronto and hosts the largest optical telescope in Canada. The observatory is located in the Town of Richmond Hill, 25 km north of the City of Toronto, and is part of the University of Toronto.

History

The observatory was founded in 1935 and was a present to the university by Jessie Donalda Dunlap as a memorial for her husband David Alexander Dunlap. At the time of its construction, the observatory's first telescope was the world's second largest. Astronomer C. T. (Tom) Bolton published the first observational demonstration of black holes – made using the observatory facilities – and is a University of Toronto professor of astronomy and astrophysics.

Equipment

The observatory has three Cassegrain telescopes, a 1.88 metre (talked about above), 0.6 metre, and a 0.5 metre.
