Davis Strait

From Free net encyclopedia

Image:Map indicating Davis Strait.png Davis Strait (French: Détroit de Davis; Template:Coor dm) lies between mid-western Greenland and the Baffin Island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. At around one to two kilometres, water depths in the strait are substantially less than in Labrador Sea to the south and Baffin Bay to the north. It is underlain by complex geological features of buried basins and ridges, probably formed by strike-slip faulting during Palaeogene times about 45 million to 62 million years ago. The strike-slip faulting transferred plate-tectonic motions in the Labrador Sea to Baffin Bay.
