Depletion
From Free net encyclopedia
Depletion is the process of running down or reducing the total resource available. This usually involves conversion into another form with a resultant release of energy - see the Laws of thermodynamics.
It is possible to delay depletion with conservation. Limiting the use of nonrechargeable batteries is an excellent example of conserving to avoid depletion. It is possible to avoid depletion with management practices such as rationing, efficiency improvements and alternative technological solutions.
When resources are consumed at unsustainable rates an exhausation or resource depletion of material sources can result in widespread shortages and regional bottlenecks. A sources depletion curve can be modeled and predictions for future supply can be surmised.
