Dexter is a city located in Mower County, Minnesota in Dexter Township. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 333. It was platted in 1874 and incorporated in 1878.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there were 333 people, 130 households, and 89 families residing in the city. The population density was 88.7/km² (229.8/mi²). There were 133 housing units at an average density of 35.4/km² (91.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.30% White, 0.00% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 1.80% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 130 households out of which 37.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,875, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $29,861 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,199. 10.4% of the population and 7.1% of families were below the poverty line. 11.7% of those under the age of 18 and 13.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
