Domestic reduced vertical separation minimum

From Free net encyclopedia

The domestic reduced vertical separation minimum (DRVSM) is a FAA initiative to cut the minimum vertical separation requirement between aircraft between flight level 290 (29,000 ft.) and 410 (41,000 ft.) from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet. The intent is to pack more airplanes into the skies, so more planes can take off and land at busy airports.

It was implemented in Europe, North Africa, Southeast Asia and North America between 2002 and 2004. DRVSM was implemented to increase airspace capacity, by essentially doubling the number of flight levels between 29,000 and 41,000 feet. Planes must have certified altimeters, and autopilots must meet more accurate standards to operate in DRVSM airspace.

Critics of the change are concerned that by reducing the space between aircraft, DRVSM may increase the number of mid-air collisions and near-collisions.
