"Don" Carcieri (born December 16, 1942) is the governor of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. He is a member of the Republican Party. He became governor in January 2003 after being elected in 2002 over Democrat Myrth York, 55% to 45%. He had previously beaten the Republican Party-endorsed candidate during the primary in his first state-wide race. He is seeking reelection in 2006.
In 2005 the Rhode Island Legislature passed a bill legalizing medical marijuana. Carcieri vetoed the bill, but state lawmakers overrode his veto in a landslide.[1]
