Down Under

From Free net encyclopedia

The term Down Under (sometimes written without capitalisation) is a colloquialism referring to things related to, or coming from Australia. Australia is sometimes known as "the land Down Under" for its perceived position at the bottom of the globe. Down Under as a noun means Australia. As an adverb, it means to or in Australia.

Despite the term's wide usage in the English-speaking world, it is rarely used by Australians themselves, many of whom regard it with some derision as a nickname bestowed by inhabitants of other countries. Nevertheless, Australians are not above using it themselves with humorous effect, as exemplified by affection for the Men at Work song Down Under. Australia's most famous boxing champion, Kostya Tszyu, was also nicknamed as "The Thunder From Down Under". Template:Seealsode:Down Under sv:Down Under
