History
E-102 Gamma, the second (or possibly third) robot of the E-100 series line, was created by Dr. Eggman. E-102 Gamma is powered by (and later influenced and ultimately controlled by) a captured pink bird held inside the robot. Although E-102 Gamma was created by and made to work under Dr. Eggman, he turns against his maker's will, and devotes his short existence to freeing the animals contained in the other E-100 units.
At first, Gamma seemed to have no feelings and served Dr. Eggman and even fought his older 'brother', E-101 Beta, to become a crewmember on the Egg Carrier. He even did not mind capturing Froggy in a contest against his younger brothers, E-103 Delta, E-104 Epsilon and E-105 Zeta. However, when Eggman tells Gamma to acquire a bird from a girl (Amy Rose) held captive in a prison cell on the Egg Carrier, Gamma finds that the bird with Amy is one he is acquainted with. Gamma experiences a change in heart, and frees both Amy and the bird.
When the Egg Carrier explodes, Gamma flies to the Mystic Ruins and determines that Dr. Eggman is evil, and deletes the files having the doctor as his master. He then decides that he needs to locate his relatives (the rest of the E-100 series) and 'free' the birds trapped inside them. Image:Gamma.jpg
Gamma first finds and destroys E-103 Delta the Windy Valley in Mystic Ruins, then locates E-104 Epsilon in Red Mountain on Angel Island, and destroys him as well. Afterward, he returns to the Egg Carrier to find E-101 Beta and E-105 Zeta. After destroying an upgraded (and much more heavily fortified) version of E-105 Zeta, he goes to the deck for the final confrontation with an improved version of E-101 Beta, E-101 Beta MkII. Gamma destroys Beta, but is severely damaged in the process. Gamma falls over and explodes, freeing the pink bird inside himself, while Beta frees the gray bird. After that, they reunite with Amy Rose's blue bird companion.
It is supposed that in Sonic Battle Dr. Eggman finds his ruined parts and rebuilds him, only now he is referred to as E-102 Chaos Gamma. This is likely because in this game Gamma is powered by a Chaos Emerald shard. He now has several new weapons, including a grenade launcher and an electric dagger.
Chaos Gamma makes numerous attempts to re-capture the robot Emerl (also known as the Gizoid). Notably, he no longer recognizes Sonic and his friends, as his original memories were most likely deleted after his initial destruction aboard the Egg Carrier.
In the final chapter of the game, Emerl can train with Gamma as a sparring partner before the final challenge. It is unclear if this is because Gamma has become good again and turned on Eggman, or if like many characters bested by the Gizoid, he feels the need to pass along his fighting skills to Emerl. Regardless, he says he can start a "training sequence," so he may have just been a similar robot with a training program installed. (Note that the game does not state for certain that the Gamma in Emerl's chapter was Chaos Gamma.)
Gameplay
Gamma's gameplay involves shooting enemies and reaching a boss/target while time diminishes. The more enemies you aim and shoot at the same time, the bigger your score and time gets.
Personality
Even though E-102 Gamma is a robot, he has a personality. He is serious, patient, very determined, and free-willed. In Sonic Battle, he does not act as free-willed and speaks less robotically (he will say "can't" instead of "can not").
In Sonic X, he was cast with being slightly more emotional and was even capable of being frightened and disturbed before he met Amy.
Relations
E-102 Gamma was the third of the E-100 Series to be activated. Being a robot, he has no "family" but there are several beings involved in his creation.
- Dr. Eggman: Creator
- E-100 Series: Predecessors/Successors/"Brothers"
Gamma's Modes
- His normal upright position is when he is walking or moderately running.
- His wheeled position is when he is running quickly.
- His flying position is whenever he encounters water.
Other Abilities
- Gamma can lock-on enemies and shoot them with his missile launcher.
- When Gamma acquires the jet booster, he can hover for some time.
- When Gamma acquires the laser cannon, his lock-on shots destroy enemies around the target, and are more powerful.
Sonic Shuffle
In the Dreamcast game, Sonic Shuffle, E-102 Gamma is a secret character. If he plays a 4, 5, or 6 card, he'll change into wheel mode. If he plays a special card during a battle, two roulettes will spin, and the sum of the two numbers will equal the damage done to an enemy.

Trivia
- When Perfect Chaos destroys Station Square, the pink flicky that came from Gamma appears with Amy instead of the blue flicky.
- In Sonic Adventure 2, there are robots that look identical to E-102, except they have two laser cannons on their arms. They are called the E-1000.
- In Sonic Heroes, E-123 Omega is introduced, who is actually the last model of the E-100 series. He looks a lot like Gamma, except with a few differences (Omega is bulkier, has larger arms, which can transform into various weapons, and has thicker knees).
- In Sonic Heroes, if Omega receives an E Rank, he will say, "I couldn't even beat Gamma or Beta."
- In Sonic Battle, the symbol in E-102's name is sometimes mistaken for an "r". It is actually the symbol for Gamma in Greek, and simply bears resemblance to a lower case r the way it is written.
Voices
- In Sonic Adventure and Sonic Shuffle, E-102 Gamma was voiced by Steve Broadie, who died soon after Sonic Adventure 2 was released in the USA.
- In Sonic Battle, he is voiced by Jon St. John.
- In Japan, it is possible that Gamma is voiced by Syun Yashiro in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Shuffle.
- In the English Sonic X dub, Gamma is voiced by Andrew Rannells. This particular voice is considered to be one of the worst character voices in any Sonic incarnation due to its very high-pitched tone which is deemed inappropriate for the character.
