Ely is a city located in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,724. The city is best known by outsiders as the most popular entry point for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Image:MNMap-doton-Ely.png According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there were 3,724 people, 1,694 households, and 916 families residing in the city. The population density was 528.6/km² (1,369.5/mi²). There were 1,912 housing units at an average density of 271.4/km² (703.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.86% White, 0.86% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,694 households out of which 21.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.9% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.72.

In the city the population was spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 16.2% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,615, and the median income for a family was $36,047. Males had a median income of $34,559 versus $18,833 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,855. 14.5% of the population and 9.5% of families were below the poverty line. 10.9% of those under the age of 18 and 12.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
