Exeter is a city located in Tulare County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,168.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
History
The name Exeter derives from the ancient city of Exeter in Devon, England. Numerous other places have also been given the name Exeter.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 9,168 people, 3,001 households, and 2,325 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,587.3/km² (4,110.9/mi²). There were 3,168 housing units at an average density of 548.5/km² (1,420.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 69.73% White, 0.69% African American, 1.47% Native American, 1.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 23.20% from other races, and 3.57% from two or more races. 38.25% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,001 households out of which 45.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% were married couples living together, 15.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 18.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.02 and the average family size was 3.43.
In the city the population was spread out with 33.7% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,738, and the median income for a family was $37,033. Males had a median income of $32,308 versus $27,371 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,795. 19.4% of the population and 14.2% of families were below the poverty line. 24.8% of those under the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
