Fan art
From Free net encyclopedia
Fan art or fanart is artwork that is based on a character, costume, item, or story that was created by someone other than the artist. The term can be used to denote any art that has been created in this manner, although it is usually used to refer to art derived from visual media, such as comics or movies. Examples of fanart would be artwork depicting Wolverine from the X-Men comics, or depicting Orlando Bloom as Legolas from the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, rather than an illustration done from an author's description of a character in a book. It generally refers to artworks by amateur artists only - so that, for example, a comic adaptation of the Lord of Rings movie would not be considered fanart.
Some people use the term "fan art" for any artwork done in Japanese manga or anime style. A depiction of Yu-Gi-Oh or Sailor Moon characters would indeed be called fan art, but a character of the artist's own creation that is drawn in an anime/manga style would not be.
Still other people use the term to refer to only works traced or freehand-copied directly from a single work of art by another (usually professional) artist. While traced and copied drawings may indeed be called fanart, many artists will fiercely argue agaisnt this use of the term, as it causes confusion and casts the term in a bad light.
Fan art is usually a violation of the original creator's copyright, but since it is usually intended as a tribute, the copyright holders tend to tolerate (and sometimes even encourage) it as long as the fan does not try to make money off of it. (Although some countries such as Japan have looser copyright laws, and so if an anime is only copyrighted in Japan, for example, drawing and even selling fanart of the characters probably wouldn't get the artist into any trouble.)
