Fand
From Free net encyclopedia
In Irish mythology, Fand was Queen of the Fairies, and wife of Manannán. Her story is recounted in Serglige Con Culainn ("The Wasting Sickness of Cú Chulainn"). Manannán left her and she was attacked by three Fomorians who wanted to control the Irish Sea. The hero Cú Chulainn agreed to help defend her as long as she married him. She agreed reluctantly, but then fell in love with him when she met him, as did he with her.
Manannán knew their relationship was doomed because Cú Chulainn was mortal and Fand was a fairy; Cú Chulainn's presence would destroy the fairies. Manannán then erased both Fand's and Cú Chulainn's memory of each other.
Fand has been interpreted a minor sea goddess originating from an ancient Manx deity.Template:Citation needed Along with her sister, Lí Ban, she was a goddess of pleasure and health.Template:Citation needed
A mons on Venus, Fand Mons (7.0°N 158.0°E), has been named in her honour.
