Fooly Cooly

"Fooly Cooly" (Japanese フリクリ Furi Kuri) is the first episode of the TV anime FLCL. It takes place in a small, fictional town called Mabase somewhere in Japan. It begins by the side of a river, where two main characters spend much of their time. A voice explains that "Nothing amazing happens in this city", this voice belongs to Naota Nanaba, a twelve-year-old grade-schooler who is constantly trying to act "mature". It's obvious from the beginning of the episode that Naota and Mamimi Samejima, a sixteen-year-old high schooler with more immature tendencies, have an odd relationship. Despite their age difference Mamimi is hanging all over Naota (whom she has nicknamed "Ta-kun"), claiming if she doesn't she'll "overflow". The two continue to walk around the city, but when Mamimi buys a drink and hands it to Ta-kun after taking a drink he refuses saying "I don't like sour drinks" (this may not seem important, but it is a theme throughout the series) but Mamimi begins leaving him with it anyway. Naota stops her simply by mentioning his brother, but before the scene can carry on much further someone hits Naota on a Vespa screaming "Lunch time!" Meanwhile, Mamimi photographs the entire incident.
As Naota lays on the street, appearing dead, Mamimi rushes to help him, but the person on the Vespa exclaims, "Native girl must stop!" and Mamimi freezes. "He just hit his head, you shouldn't touch him yet." The Vespa rider continues, then begins panicking "Oh no! I killed him! He's totally dead!” before finally removing to the helmet and revealing that she is actually a very pretty girl in her twenties. She then exclaims "Come back to life!" before giving Naota "CPR" which appears to be more of an incredibly long kiss. Naota revives all the same. The Vespa-girl then hits him over the head with her Rickenbacker bass and picks him up by his ankles, shaking him, when nothing happens she yells at him "You are totally useless!" before speeding off again. Naota and Mamimi are baffled.
Naota returns home and soon discovers a huge horn protruding from his forehead where he was hit. He figures out he can cover it up with a bandage. He goes to school the next day, hearing rumors from his friends about a "Wasp woman" who rides a vespa and marks or "stings" perverted guys. Then his friends ask about a hicky Mamimi gave him, when he offers no answer they ask if the Wasp woman stung him, again he won't answer and they begin exclaiming that he is a pervert. Naota decides to go to the hospital about the horn, but runs into the vespa girl along the way. She asks if "anything happened after I left?". Naota says no, but then, the vespa womam sees the bandage. When she asks what's behind it, Naota rushes off to the hospital, crossing train tracks and leaving the vespa woman stuck behind a passing train. Inside he lies on a table as the nurse stands in a corner, she claims he has "Flictonic Clipple Waver Syndrome" (this is possibly a meaning of "Fooly Cooly"), a condition that occurs when boys try too hard. Naota thinks this is ridiculous and the truth is realized when the nurse reveals herself, it's the vespa women, who attacks him with her bass once more. Naota escapes and goes home to rest, meanwhile Mamimi calls him but he yells at her and blows her off.
Naota is called downstairs for dinner only to find that the vespa woman is now in their house and a highly elaborate manga-style scene takes place. Apparently Naota's father, Kamon, was also run over with the vespa. Kamon asked her to stay with them and be a house-keeper. She is then introduced as Haruko Haruhara and exclaims that she saw Naota fooling around with a high school girl. Naota explains that it is Mamimi and his father says, "Ah, your brother is away so she's sinking her fangs into you, Naota. Fondling around fooling around FOOLY COOLY!..." "What's Fooly Cooly?" Naota replies "How should I know? I'm only in grade school!” Naota's father and grandfather then try to explain fooly cooly. Haruko then interjects, "Oh I see, I'm already in that kind of relationship with Ta-kun here. Mouth-to-mouth!” Kamon and Naota's grandpa are shocked, though not apparently angry. Naota, who is fed up, goes upstairs to take a shower. When going to bed however, he finds Haruko in his room. Naota asks who she really is and Haruko replies that she's an alien. Naota blows this off of course, but Haruko questions him about the bandage again. Naota snaps at her, "You came here with my father, so go stay with him!” Haruko frowns, "But you're the one I saw first Ta-kun." she replies and Naota blushes. Seeing that the bottom bunk is his, Haruko says she'll take the top, but Naota won't let her, claiming the top bunk is his brother's and no one can sleep there. Haruko asks about his brother and he explains that he is in America to play baseball.
Haruko then lies down next to Naota and he panics asking if that was where she was sleeping. She replies that there is nowhere else, so Naota goes downstairs with a pillow. He finds Kamon still awake examining some pictures and Kamon asks him if he was run over too. Naota immediately realizes whet this means, "Mamimi was here!?" he asks, sounding worried. Kamon explains that she bought some day old bread from their bakery and Naota runs off to find her. He finds her at the bridge and they get into a conversation about Naota's brother. He asks her how much she likes him. She replies, "Like watermelon, or a panda with a mean face, or sandals with pressure points drawn on them, or the smell of a blackboard eraser, or a Sunday when you wake up and it's been raining... well... I like him more than hard bread,” Naota suggests that they stop messing around and tells Mamimi that his brother has a new American girlfriend and suddenly Mamimi puts her hands to her head exclaiming that she's going to overflow and she passes out.
Meanwhile the horn on Naota's head grows bigger and a robot, followed by a detached robot hand, come out from it and begin fighting each other. The robot is red, with a TV for a head and will later in the series be called "Canti". In the end Haruko comes to save the day by beating the hand and hitting the rampaging robot with her bass guitar. The robot becomes a light blue color and stops. Haruko appears to look around confused for a moment but then the scene changes to morning and Naota is getting ready for school still claiming that "Nothing amazing happens here...” Although, now the robot from that night is working in the bakery. He runs to find Mamimi who hands him a drink, the same one she offered him earlier. He still complains that it is too sour for him, but gulps it down anyway. Template:FLCL
