Gaudy
From Free net encyclopedia
Gaudy is a term used to describe anything as showy in a tasteless or vulgar way. In old English the noun «gaude» meant ornament or trinket. In later English its spelling became «gaud» and was accompanied by the adjective «gaudy». Much more recent folk etymology wrongly attributes the word to the name and work of Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926).
Oxford reunion
A gaudy (from the Latin, "gaudere", meaning "to rejoice") at the University of Oxford is a reunion held by a college for its alumni. The origin of the term may be connected to the traditional University graduation song, Gaudeamus. Gaudy celebrations normally take place during the summer vacation, and may include events such as speeches, lectures, concerts and dinners. Template:UK-university-stub
