GEO will propagate transparency of responsibility that will ensure its position as the most credible and meaningful source of information, through quality programming based on issues."
About the Channel and its programs
GEO's name probably comes from the fact that it utilizes a Geosynchronous orbit satellite for its transmissions. However, in the Urdu language of Pakistan, the word GEO also means "Live On".
One of GEO's most politically hard-hitting programs is Follow up with Fahd hosted by Fahd Husain. Hans Blix, Shimon Peres and Angelina Jolie are three personalities, among others, who were interviewed this past year by Fahd on the program.
GEO has many entertainment programs as well, especially the ever popular half hour soap operas which are called drama in Pakistan and India.
While a forerunner when it comes to on-the-hour, every hour newscasts, GEO has often been lambasted for its kitsch, populist bent, making news out of non-news items. A definite plus with GEO was a ready team of journalists employed by the Jang Group of Publications that owns it. Branching out from mainstream print to electronic media meant that there was already a ready pool of correspondents all over the country. On the other hand, these correspondents seem to have no idea when it comes to practising media ethics.
Mir Khalil ur Rehman was the founder of the Jang Group of newspapers and his younger son Mir Shakil ur Rehman is the present owner.
Awards
- A Geo documentary recently won the Monte Carlo Film Awards.
- A documentary of Geo covering water scarcity in the Indus river delta won the environment category award at the Monte Carlo film festival.
Future plans
GEO plans to launch another 10 Pakistani channels targeting music, film etc. For this purpose the channel is setting up a 50 acre studio in Karachi.
