For the newspaper of the Cuban Communist Party see Granma (newspaper).

Granma is the ship that transported the fighters of the Cuban Revolution to Cuba in 1956. It is also the name of the official newspaper of the Cuban Communist Party, (see Granma (newspaper)), Granma University in Bayano and Granma Province, which were named after the yacht.

The ship

Granma is a 60-foot yacht, designed to accommodate 12 people. It was purchased from a retired USA citizen in 1956, who had named it for his grandmother, and filled with 82 Cuban exiles under the leadership of Fidel Castro to start a revolution against Fulgencio Batista. Other rebels on the boat (known as expedicionarios del yate Granma) were Che Guevara and Raúl Castro. They sailed from the Mexican port of Tuxpan, Veracruz, and landed on the shores of what is now Granma Province.

It is now exhibited at the Granma Memorial adjacent to the Museo de la Revolución in Havana. A portion of old Oriente Province was renamed Granma Province in honor of the vessel.
