Greater and Lesser Tunbs
From Free net encyclopedia
The Greater and Lesser Tunbs (in Persian: تنب بزرگ و تنب کوچک "Tunb-e Buzurg & Tunb-e Kuchak") (tunb is Persian for "hilly place") are two islands in the eastern Persian Gulf.
These and the island of Abu Musa are occupied and claimed by Iran (Persia); they are administered as part of the province of Hormozgan. They are also claimed by the United Arab Emirates. The Gulf Cooperation Council (consisting of Arab nations of the Persian Gulf region) supports UAE's claim and the position that the dispute should be subject to international arbitration.
The surface of the Greater Tunb is 10.3 km² and the lesser Tunb 2 km².
There is a red soil mine active on the Greater Tunb Island.
