The Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial is located about three kilometers north of the town.
De town is named after a small river called: Groes. This river does not excist anymore. The town is build within hills and is surrounded by forrest. Because of this, Groesbeek was isolated in the past. The town has traditionally a very close community and they had a strong dialect.
Beacause of the fact that Groesbeek lies on the border of the Netherlands with Germany it was nearly completely destroyed in WO II. Groesbeek was one of the landingplaces in the famous parachutelandings from 'operation Market garden'.
Today Groesbeek is well-known in the Netherlands for its soccer teams. They have 3 clubs that play at the highest amateur-level (De Treffers, Germania & Archilles'29) and several other clubs. For a town under 20000 inhabitants, the town has many clubs and plays very high in the Dutch amateur-soccer competition.
International the town is best known for being the setting of the thirt day of the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse. On this day de walkers of this international event have to go trough the town and its surrounding hills. Wel known is the remark: 'when you're able to go past Groesbeek, the end is very near'.
The town has three famous museums: the Africa Museum, the National Liberation Museum (WO II) and the Bible Openair Museum.
