Plot
When SpongeBob sees the 'help wanted' sign on the Krusty Krab window, he decides to try and get the job. He works out and heads towards the Krusty Krab. However, he gives up before he gets there, thinking he's not good enough. Patrick persuades him to go for it, and SpongeBob does. Squidward and Mr. Krabs do not want SpongeBob working with them, so he tells him that he can join the 'Krusty Krew' if he passes a "test"--SpongeBob is required to get a 'Hydrodynamic spatula with port and starboard attachments and a turbo-drive' (essentially sending SpongeBob on a form of snipe hunt). Later, a large crowd of angry anchovies come in, demanding Krabby Patties. But because no one is able to make Krabby Patties at the time, they protest, and Squidward and Mr. Krabs are forced to climb up the 'mast'. Their lives are in danger, until SpongeBob arrives, flying with his 'hydrodynamic spatula with port and starboard attachments and a turbo-drive' (according to SpongeBob, they only had one in stock). Mr. Krabs is flabbergasted at the fact that SpongeBob actually passed the "test", and together they satisfy the anchovies. In the end, SpongeBob finally gets his job.
Trivia
- This episode features the song "Livin' the Sunlight, Lovin' the Moonlight" as recorded by deceased 1960s cult musician, Tiny Tim.
- Initially, this episode was not included on the SpongeBob season 1 DVD set, presumably because of music licensing issues involving the aforementioned song. However, the episode has since been made available on the DVD release of the third season as a bonus feature.
- Because this episode is the first, it has many differences to the rest of the series. However, the FIRST airing of the episode had many other minor differences corrected later. For example, this is the only episode where SpongeBob's bed is on the right. Differences in voices are another example. SpongeBob's voice is slightly lower and Patrick's is deeper. Designs and colors are also different. Mr. Krabs' eyelids are bright pink opposed to just red, Squidward wears an orange shirt, and Gary's eye pupils and irises are smaller with a lower tone of voice in the "meow" (although Tom Kenny claims to use a new "meow" for each episode where Gary is shown meowing). The changes were made when the series official aired.
- This episode takes place in November 1998, probably because in Employee of the Month, SpongeBob says that he has been an employee for 26 months, the episode that takes place on January 27 and January 28, 2001.
