Hibbing is a city located in St. Louis County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,071. McCarthy Beach State Park is nearby.

Geography
Image:MNMap-doton-Hibbing.png According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 483.1 km² (186.5 mi²). 470.5 km² (181.7 mi²) of it is land and 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.60% water. By land area, Hibbing is the largest city in Minnesota.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 17,071 people, 7,439 households, and 4,597 families residing in the city. The population density was 36.3/km² (94.0/mi²). There were 8,037 housing units at an average density of 17.1/km² (44.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.33% White, 0.46% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 7,439 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,346, and the median income for a family was $43,558. Males had a median income of $38,064 versus $22,183 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,561. 11.7% of the population and 8.1% of families were below the poverty line. 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

- Hibbing is the birthplace of famous baseball player and home run king Roger Maris.
- Longtime Boston Celtic Power forward, NBA hall of famer, and current Minnesota Timberwolves Vice President Kevin McHale was born in Hibbing.
- Charles Manson prosecutor and author Vincent Bugliosi was also born in Hibbing.
- Music legend Bob Dylan (known then as Robert Zimmerman) was born in Duluth, Minnesota, but grew up in Hibbing.
- Rudy Perpich governor of Minnesota from December 1976 to January 1979 and January 1983 to January 1991 was born in and started his political career in Hibbing.
- Gary Puckett from Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.
- Jeno Paulucci, founder of the Chun King Chinese food company, was born and reared in Hibbing. Hibbing's planetarium, "Paulucci Space Theatre",[1] is named for him.
Other interesting facts
- The Greyhound Lines bus company was started in Hibbing, but the corporate headquarters has long since left the region. Even the company's buses no longer stop in the city, although the Greyhound Bus Museum remains.
