Highlighter
From Free net encyclopedia
A highlighter is a form of marker pen which is used to highlight sections of documents in a vivid colour, but not intended to obscure the content beneath the marking. As such, highlighter ink is translucent.
Many highlighters come in bright, often fluorescent colours, the commonest colour or one that is supposed to be most typical is yellow, but they also come in pink, blue, green, and purple.
The pens can be sold in a retractable form.[1]
A company called ink Tank manufactures a highlighter that has the highlighter on one end with an eraser nib on the other.[2] Other unusual types of highlighters include the "trilighter," a sort of triangularly-shaped pen with a different-coloured nib at each apex,[3] and pens that come in a "stacking" form.[4]
A "highlighter pen combo" is sold by Office Max.[5]
Dry highlighters (occasionally called "dry line highlighters")[6] are highlighters that, instead of being a pen, are applicators similar to audiocassette tapes for putting a tape on the sections desired to highlight. (One company selling them is Tombow Inc.)[7] Unlike standard highlighters they are advertised as "[e]rasable with standard eraser".[8] They are to be distinguished from "dry mark highlighters"[9] of the type sometimes advertised as being useful for highlighting the Bible.
Dry highlighters of a different type are sometimes referred to as "drylighters".[10]
On rare occasions artists have used highlighters (including erasable highlighters)[11], either alone or in conjunction with other media, to make drawings.
Word processing software has the ability to simulate highlighting capabilities by using a technique not dissimilar from reverse video on some terminals. Similar to this is the program Web Highlighter, allowing one to "attach highlighting, notes, and links to any Web page viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later."[12]
