The City of Homestead is the second oldest city in Miami-Dade County (incorporated in 1913) and gets its name from a path that was the only way to reach the area, the "Homesteaders Trail". As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 31,909. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 37,957 [1].

The city of Homestead lies near the southern terminus of Florida's Turnpike, where this highway ends at its junction with US-1. Homestead is immediately north of Florida City, and these two cities comprise the greater Homestead-Florida City area. Some of the notable unincorporated communities in the area are Redland, Leisure City, Naranja, and Princeton.

A noteworthy tourist attraction is the mysterious Coral Castle, built by a jilted lover, Edward Leedskalnin, over the course of 28 years from 1923 to 1951. ref. The Fruit and Spice Park is also of interest.

Homestead bore the brunt of Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 hurricane, which hit South Florida on August 24, 1992. The city of Homestead was put on the map due to the sheer devestation wrought by Hurricane Andrew and through the national appearances by, then City Manager, Alex Muxo. Better known nationally as being involved in the creation of the Homestead-Miami Speedway and the BankAtlantic Center, Mr. Muxo was vital in directing national attention to the plight of residents in South Florida. A memorable moment was on CNN when Mr. Muxo was seen crying over the remains of the former Cleveland Indians Training Facility, which was never used by Cleveland. Since 2002 the city has experienced a building and housing boom due to the scarcity of developable land elsewhere in Miami-Dade County.
