House of Sand and Fog

House of Sand and Fog is a 1999 novel by Andre Dubus III. Template:Infobox Film In 2003, the novel was adapted in to a movie by Vadim Perelman and Shawn Otto with the help of the original author of the book. It was directed by Vadim Perelman in his first directorial outing aside from shooting commercials.

Story line

An Iranian (Persian) immigrant (Kingsley) who was required to flee from Iran during times of conflict now lives in America working many odd jobs to support his family all the while keeping up the appearance of holding the position of a respected businessman to his family (Shohreh Aghdashloo, Jonathan Ahdout, Navi Rawat). When given the opportunity to invest in a house auctioned at a low price because of an unpaid tax bill, he does so with the intention of renovating the house and selling it for four times the purchase price. The director describes the movie as 3 people who each have a noble cause they fight for. The previous owner was wrongfully evicted from the house that her father left her at his passing for the petty unpaid tax bill of $500. The plot thickens in a downward spiral leading to tragic events.

Awards

It was nominated for three Academy Awards, for Best Original Score (James Horner), Best Actor (Ben Kingsley) and Best Supporting Actress (Shohreh Aghdashloo).
