The 389 students in the Howe school district have begun to travel outside their remote school dwellings in recent months. They have been to Atlanta to visit Zoo Atlanta. They have been to Cincinnati where they learned about the Black King Snake. They have been on a navy battleship anchored in New York Harbor. Why they even like New York so much they are going to go to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown later on this month [Lance Ford, OTA Spring, 2002].[Federal Computer Week]
"Our students are an impoverished group of kids, and many of them will probably never leave the county or go further than high school [in their education]," Ford said. Howe is 90% E-rate district, where over 75% of the student body qualifies for the free and reduced lunch program. Yet they visited the Pakistan UN ambassador and asked him “What is Al-Qaida?”. Lance believes the program is instrumental in exposing students to people, places and experiences without the traditional restrictions of time limitations, cost or geographical barriers.
