It is the world's largest aircraft lessor by value, though ILFC's archrival, General Electric's GECAS unit has more aircraft. It leases Boeing and Airbus aircraft to airlines all over the world including Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Emirates, and Vietnam Airlines.
ILFC is owned by U.S. insurance giant AIG, and is run by founder Steven F. Udvar-Hazy. At the beginning of 2005, ILFC had an inventory of 824 aircraft (per AvSoft/The Wall Street Journal.)
ILFC has ordered five passenger Airbus A380 aircraft and five freighter versions and will receive the first aircraft in the summer of 2007. It has already placed two passenger versions with Emirates and is in talks to lease a further two to Air China. Talks with other carriers are ongoing, including Cathay Pacific (ref: Airliner World, March 2005).
