IPIX

From Free net encyclopedia

IPIX (Interactive Picture, Inc.) is an imaging technology company headquartered in Reston, Virginia. One of its trademark products is visual technology allowing a 360-degree field of view video and photography. It is traded on NASDAQ.

Ipix has patented its technique for creating 360-degree images using two fish-eye photographs, and pursues an active policy of filling patent law suits against any company or individual that develops what they perceive as similar technologies (the german physics professor Helmut Derschand the company Infinite Pictures are the most notable examples). The company has been widely critized for this, the main argument been that these activities have acted to put a damper on the development of interactive immersive image technologies. It is also argued that some of their claims are quite broad, suggesting that any geometric remapping of a fisheye image is their invention [1].
