Image:Iiitb-logo.png International Institute of Information Technology - Bangalore, abbreviated to iiit-b, is one of the new generation premier Graduate schools in India offering M.Tech. and PhD programs in the field of Information Technology. In February 2005, iiit-b was conferred Deemed University Status under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act 1956.
The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.

History
iiit-b was started on September 15, 1999 as Indian Institute of Information Technology - Bangalore drawing inspiration from the established "Institutions of national importance in India", such as Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), National Institute of Design (NID), National Law School University of India (NLSUI), and, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). In February 2005, the name was changed to the present one.
Motto
To build on the track record set by India in general and Bangalore in particular, to enable India to play a key role in the IT scenario
through a world-class institute with a focus on education and research, entrepreneurship and innovation.

A number of Visiting Faculty members and Adjunct Faculty members contribute by way of teaching courses, guide stidents in research, and help in Lab development; they include Professor Tridib Roy Chaudhry (MS Marylnd, USA) teaches an elective course on Advanced Databases, Professor S Nagarajan (MS IIT Madras) teaches an elective course on Advanced Operating Systems, Professor DN Prahlad (MS IIT Madras) teaches an elective course on Advanced Operating Systems (along with Professor S Nagarajan), Professor Padmini Srinivasan (PhD NLSUI) in Accounting, teaches a course on Accounting & Finance Professor G Ramesh (MS Stanford, USA) teaches an elective courses on Software Project Management and Software Testing Professor Roland Haas (PhD) teaches an elective course on Automotive IT, Profesor Madhu Pitke (PhD Bombay) - former Executive Director of C-DOT helps the Institute in many activities in Telecom area, Professor GS Sridhar (MBA IIM Ahmedabad) in Business Strategy, Professor Rakesh Godhwani (MBA IIM Bangalore) in Tech Marketing and Professor PCP Bhatt (PhD IIT Kanpur) teaches a course on Operating Systems; Professor P Anandan (PhD UMass Amherst, USA) who heads Microsoft Research, Professor Aravind Bhardwaj (PhD Virgina Tech, USA) who heads the Advanced Engineering group in Ashok Leyland, Madras help IIIT-B in many ways.
Students
About 300 students are currently enrolled in the M Tech (2 year full time program) degree program. These students are selected (through an All India Entrance Examination) out of thousands of applicants from all over the country. They come to IIIT-Bangalore from premier Institutes (IITs and NITs), University Colleges and other engineering colleges.
The PhD program was started in August 2005. There are three PhD students currently registered with IIIT-Bangalore. It is expected to reach a size of 40 over the next five years.
Alumni
Nearly 600 alumni have graduated in the five Convocations held so far.
Three of them have stayed back for PhD at IIIT-Bangalore; another six of them have gone to other premier institutes (MIT USA, Brandenburg, Germany, University of Trento, Italy, University of California, Berkeley, USA and BITS Pilani) to pursue PhD;
The majority of them have gone to work either
in premier Indian Corporations - Infosys, TCS, Wipro, iFlex, Covansys, CTS, Ramco, Mastek, Satyam, VisualSoft, GAVS
or
in MNCs - GE, Intel, Microsoft, SAP, Yahoo, Philips, Siemens, Honeywell, Oracle
Research Activities
There are a number of government & industry funded labs functiong at IIIT Bangalore. These include Intel Planet Lab, Honeywell Control Lab, Intel Community PC Lab, HP IMS Lab, Siemens Vision Lab and HP Cluster Computing Lab
There are a number of Research Projects funded by government & industry. These include ICT for Development funded by Department of Information Technology of the Government of India, Telematics Project funded by the Department of Science & Technology of the Government of India, ICT for Development funded by Microsoft, ICT Cluster Study funded by Liverhume Trust, Cluster Computing in University Environment funded by HP, Community PC Initiatives funded by Intel, and MONSOON & INCITE projects of the European Union)
