InfiltrationMod
From Free net encyclopedia
Infiltration is a tactical shooter type first-person shooter mod based on the Unreal Tournament (1999) engine. The mod was produced by Sentry Studios and featured very realistic gameplay in respect to modern warfare as a soldier on foot in open areas booth and indoors, comparable to Operation Flashpoint or Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six.

Infiltration for UT99
Infiltration was Particularly notable for its handling of troop movements and actions. Everything from the ability to lean whether standing, crouching or prone to the realistic reloading times of its weaponry with different animations being played depending on whether or not a clip or belt had been entirely expended was instantiated in the game, resulting in an extremely realistic experience. This turned out to be both a strength and a weakness, as though it managed to attract a mature and varied following, many players accustomed to the run-and-gun action of such mainstream games as Counter-Strike were alienated by the vastly different gameplay.
The most distinguishing feature of Infiltration was its revolutionary aiming system, coded from scratch by the Infiltration development team. Guns could either be held at waist level or drawn up to the screen enabling the player to aim using the sights on the gun. Even then this alone was not all that unique, but the Infiltration team went the additional mile in producing a system that did not tie the gun's invisible crosshair to the center of the screen, allowing the player to move the gun side to side using only their arms and without rotating their bodies at all. More simply put, moving the gun did not result in the entire body also being rotated to reflect the change in direction, a refreshing change from other games in which a slight movement of the mouse would result the entire character model being visible rotated on a point.
Infiltration's biggest and most content-filled release was that of Infiltration 2.9, which was made available for download on December 1, 2003. This release sported countless new features, a list of which as well as a video of gameplay in Infiltration 2.9 is available here. This release was expected to come at any day for a period exceeding a year, leading to the catchphrases "soon" and "when it's done" being the knee-jerk and semi tongue-in-cheek responses whenever a question was posed concerning the exact time of release.
Infiltration post-UT99
Some time after the release of Infiltration 2.9, Sentry Studios announced that they were beginning the production of the next iteration of Infiltration as a mod on one of the next-gen games. Though many were in support of using Unreal Tournament 2004 as this would facilitate Macintosh and Linux support, the Source engine was settled upon as the engine of choice for the next project, and work was begun.
Next-Gen Infiltration Project Cancelled
On October 2, 2005, a post was made on the Infiltration main page announcing the cancellation of the new version of Infiltration citing a lack of free time as well as "various other factors present from within the team".
