Inheritance (TNG episode)

From Free net encyclopedia

"Inheritance" is the title of an episode of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. It first aired on November 22, 1993.

On an endangered planet, Data meets a woman who claims to be his mother. Soon it is confirmed that Juliana Tainer is the widow of Dr. Noonien Soong, and she tells Data about his "childhood". A viola session is held with both Data and Juliana Tainer playing; this, and his recognition of her blinking sequence as being programmed by the Fourier theorem, suggests to Data that she is another android. Tainer suffers an accident by falling from a rock cliff which severs her arm and leaves her unconscious, and Data confirms, by a hologram implanted into Tainer, that the biological Tainer had died and was transferred into an android body by Soong. Data is then left to decide whether or not he should tell Tainer of her true identity as an android or allowing her to continue to believe she is a human. Data decides not to tell her of her true identity.

Trivia

  • Fionnula Flanagan was cast as Juliana Tainer because she was really skilled at playing the viola, thus, the reason for her apparent exceptional ability to play the instrument.
