It connects with I-81 in the city's southern end and again in the suburb of North Syracuse. It travels through the Syracuse suburbs of Jamesville and DeWitt along the way. After crossing I-81 in North Syracuse, I-481 continues northwest as NY 481 to the cities of Fulton and Oswego, terminating at the intersection with NY 104.

I-481 does not appear to parallel or replace any "older" former routes, in the same manner many 2-digit Interstates usually run intertwined with an older U.S. route. However, some older maps indicate the state portion between Fulton and Oswego replaces or runs close to the path of former NY 57. Some parts which stray from present-day NY 481 are still signed as Oswego County route 57.

City of Fulton Expressway and 65MPH Limit End

Beyond the Expressway

In the City of Fulton, NY 481 continues as a four-lane undivided road through most of the city. A short stretch is two lanes. Just north of Fulton, the highway again expands to four lanes, divided, but not a "true" expressway, as the speed limit is 55MPH, and there are a number of at-grade intersections including a railroad crossing. The road narrows back down to two lanes just before the limits of the City of Oswego, NY. Route 481 enters Oswego as East First Street, parallel to the Oswego River. While the street continues to the Oswego Harbor, the Route 481 designation ends at the intersection of NY 104, also known as Bridge Street.Template:Interstate-stub Template:3di
