Ithaca, Nebraska

From Free net encyclopedia

Ithaca is a village located in Saunders County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 168. Even though a small village, Ithaca has attracted several notable residents to the surrounding area. Being close to both Omaha and Lincoln has made it an excellent location for more wealthy urbanites to build homes in the country.

Most famous of those to build a home in the area was Paul Erdős who built a medium sized house in the countryside, though never resided there. The area where Erdős at one point intended to settle became something of a local hotspot for researchers in Mathematics. Several Mathematicians from the University of Nebraska settled here in the mid 1980's, hoping that by being virtual neighbors with Paul Erdős, they would gain some prestige. While Paul Erdős never did occupy the house in Ithaca, the area still to this day has benefited from the small community of great minds he inadvertantly created, and is known as Erdosville.
