Jared Fogle

Jared S. Fogle (born January 1, 1978 in Indianapolis, IN), nicknamed "Jared the Subway Guy", is a spokesman used by Subway restaurants in its television advertising campaign.

In March of 1998 Fogle was a student at Indiana University who weighed 425 lb (192 kg). He began a 1,000 calorie a day diet consisting of nothing but the food available at his local Subway sandwich shop, which happened to be at the bottom of his apartment building. Less than a year later he weighed 190 lb (86 kg) which given his height of 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) translates into a body mass index decrease from an obese 55 to a healthy 24½. During this time he also began walking to all of his classes on campus instead of taking the bus. The story of his rapid weight loss was reported in his college newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student, and their printed account later received attention from the Associated Press and Men's Health magazine. Due to this positive publicity, the Subway sandwich company hired Fogle as its spokesman. He graduated from IU with a degree in Management and International Business and now maintains his weight with a normal 2,400 calorie-a-day diet.

Subway has used Fogle in a number of television commercials and sponsored in-store appearances throughout the United States. Though he is a visible symbol of the company, the Subway Sandwich corporation does not officially endorse Fogle's weight-losing diet.

In addition to his work directly for Subway, Fogle also gives regular talks on fitness and healthy eating. He has made appearances with the USO at Guantanamo Bay and given lectures at YMCAs. Fogle was parodied in a 2000 Saturday Night Live sketch and again in a 2002 South Park episode where he confesses to have aides, people confuse it with him having AIDS. Jared appears in the 2004 film Super Size Me, a documentary dealing with the effects of a fast food diet on health.
