Joel Benjamin is the top rated active chess player who was born in the United States. He was the US Chess Champion in 1987, 1997, and 2000. He was hired as a consultant by IBM to help with the Deep Blue chess computer that defeated World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.
On the April 2005 FIDE list, Benjamin had an Elo rating of 2563, ranking him thirteenth among American players and second among native-born American players, behind only the inactive Bobby Fischer.
