It is a state of the Federated States of Micronesia with a population of 7,700 and a part of the Caroline Islands. The land area is 110 km², and population 7 317 (1994 census). The state is subdivided into four municipalities:
The capital of the state is Tofol, in Lelu municipality.
Kosrae is an island of stunning natural beauty. Largely unspoiled and rarely visited, Kosrae has become a "secret" destination for SCUBA divers and hikers. The coral reefs that surround the island are kept in pristine shape through an extensive mooring buoy system maintained by concerned residents and volunteers.
Lush vegetation and steep mountains keep the island largely undeveloped. Viewed from the sea, the island's distinct shape resembles a female body. This has led to the island being called "the island of the sleeping lady."
There is an airport at the northwestern coast of the island with flights from Hawaii and Guam.
It is thought to be the island where the survivors of the plane crash are in ABC's Lost.
