Kurt Eisner

From Free net encyclopedia

Kurt Eisner (14 May 186721 February 1919) was a Bavarian politician.

He studied at Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin where he was a theater critic and edited several socialist newspapers. He was critical about the theory of historical materialism from Marx which was a part of the dogmatic thought of the SPD (the German Social Democrats). His thought was heavily influenced by Nietzsche. He agreed with Nietzsche about equality. People should have the possibility to rise above the average and be creative. This is the only way he felt could make society better. But he regarded Nietzsche also as a monster and a sinister thinker. Eisner was a pacifist and a socialist, so he was against ideolizing of the strong that Nietzsche encouraged.

He joined the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany in 1917, and was convicted of treason in 1918 for his role in inciting a strike of munitions workers.

After his release from prison, he organized the revolution that overthrew the monarchy in Bavaria. He declared Bavaria to be a republic on November 9, 1918 and became the first republican premier of Bavaria.
