Lady for a Day

Lady for a Day is a 1933 film which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. It was written by Robert Riskin, based on the Damon Runyon story Madame la Gimp. The film was directed by Frank Capra.
Apple Annie (May Robson) is a street peddler who has always pretended to her daughter that she is a member of high society. Now her daughter plans to marry a member of Spain's aristocracy. Annie must pretend to be wealthy or the fiance's father, a count, will not give his blessing. She gets the help of Dave the Dude (Warren William), a gambler who considers Annie a good luck charm, to obtain a luxury apartment and entertain the visitors. Dave's friend Judge Henry Blake (Guy Kibbee), a pool hall hustler, agrees to pretend to be Apple Annie's husband as part of the charade.
