Lahore University of Management Sciences

Template:Infobox University Lahore University of Management Sciences, usually referred to by its acronym LUMS, is a University in Lahore, Pakistan.

LUMS was established by Industrialists and people belonging to the Pakistan's leading private and public sector corporations. The goal was to develop an institution, which would provide rigorous academic and intellectual training and state of the art research facilities comparable to leading universities around the world.

History

Image:Lums Main Campus2.jpg The University was granted a charter by the Government of Pakistan in March 1985. The Board of Trustees, the policy-making body of the University, comprises leading members of the business community academia and representatives of the government. The principal functions of the Board are to set broad policy guidelines and to review the operations of the University. The Board of Governors, being the sponsor of LUMS, raises the necessary funds for the University's operation and maintenance. Many board members are representatives of the business community and form a crucial link between the University and the business world.

Suleman Dawood School of Business

The Business School was the first school established at the Lahore University of Management Sciences in 1986, following a growing recognition that Pakistan needed good managers to meet the challenges of the future. We decided this goal involved an original and innovative curriculum, a high quality student intake and a motivated and qualified faculty.

School of Arts and Sciences

The School of Arts and Sciences offers the BSc (Honours) program, the MSc Economics program, and the MS Computer Science and MS Computer Engineering programs. In addition to this it also offers doctoral programs in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Mathematics.

School of Science and Engineering

The School of Sciencce and Engineering is the new project which is expected to start in the Fall of 2006.

Faculty

Image:Lums library building.JPG The LUMS Faculty includes PhDs from some of the best universities in the world, including Stanford, MIT, University of California at Berkeley, The Georgia Institute of Technology, Cambridge University, Oxford University, and Harvard University. The faculty currently includes three Rhodes Scholars.

Research at LUMS

Graduate level students are associated with Research Labs along with their course work. Every year a significant amout of research work done as a collaboration of LUMS faculty and students gets published in International and National Conferences.

Student life

Image:Hostels.jpg Environment at LUMS has been highly conducive to learning for the students. Campus contains an Academic Block, Library, IT Centre, the Pepsi Dining Centre, Mosque and Computer Labs. There have been hostels for both male and female students. There is a state of the art Sports complex for sports and other extra curricular activities. Many sports events are scheduled round the year at the campus.

LUMS students also take part in other extra curricular activities like managing acedmic conferences, hosting charity shows and Debating events.

Student societies, clubs, and associations help to meet the recreational and vocational needs of students, who also bring with them a rich blend of extra-curricular interests.

LUMS Student Council

The Student Council of the Lahore University of Management Sciences has been formed to promote and safeguard the interests of the student body as effectively as possible. The Student Council has been envisaged as a body that will aim to address the concerns of the LUMS student body in concert with the faculty and administration of LUMS. The Council acts to promote and ensure accountability within the societies that function for the purpose of providing recreation and extra-curricular activities for the student body. The Council acts as a consultative body with the administration of the university in all administrative matters and policy decisions which pertain to the student body directly. Most importantly, the Council will aim to achieve the above objectives without getting involved in any national or regional political issues and will not be used as a platform for advocating any political interests whatsoever.
