Laketrails Base Camp
From Free net encyclopedia
Laketrails Base Camp is a wilderness canoe trip camp for teenagers with a base camp located on Laketrails Island, an eighteen-acre (73,000 m²) island at the southwest tip of Oak Island, Minnesota, on the Minnesota/Ontario border in Lake of the Woods.
Laketrails has a winter headquarters in Little Falls, Minnesota.
Laketrails was founded in 1952 by two Catholic priests from the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota: Father Bill Mehrkens and Father Jerry Noesen. The camp was owned for several years by the Diocese of Crookston, but when a later bishop of Crookston decided he did not want a diocesan camp, the camp went independent, but retaining much of its Catholic character.
Teenagers come up to the base camp by bus, car, boat, or plane; plan and pack for a canoe trip, and take out across Lake of the Woods on canoe trips lasting from five to twelve days. There are occasionally special trips for adults, and sailing trips.
