Langley, Washington

Langley is a city located in Island County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 959 "Langleyites."
Although Langley actually sits on the north side of the southern half of Whidbey Island, and rests above Puget Sound, it is often referred to as Langley-by-the-Sea. It was founded in the 1800s, and was incorporated early in the 1900s. Today it is a modern village, with a year-round population hovering near 1,000; however, in the summer, it can swell to over 5,000 persons. Langley is served by Island County Fire District #3, with a station across from City Hall. The current mayor is Neil Colburn (2004-2008), and the police chief is Bob Herzberg.
Based on per capita income, one of the more reliable measures of affluence, Langley ranks 92nd of 522 areas in the state of Washington to be ranked.

Langley was officially incorporated on February 26, 1913.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 959 people, 486 households, and 268 families residing in the city. The population density was 451.6/km² (1,165.9/mi²). There were 542 housing units at an average density of 255.2/km² (658.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.25% White, 0.31% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 2.09% from two or more races. 1.88% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 486 households out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.7% were non-families. 39.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.97 and the average family size was 2.61.
In the city the population was spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 15.7% from 25 to 44, 35.5% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 76.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,792, and the median income for a family was $51,563. Males had a median income of $41,750 versus $30,125 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,940. 10.6% of the population and 5.2% of families were below the poverty line. 10.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
Mystery game
The city is also notable for hosting a murder mystery game on the last weekend of every February. A fake newpaper detailing the setup is purchased at the Visitor & Information Center. The players are then instructed to search every store for a box of cards with a clue to the mystery printed on each card. Various locals play the parts of characters in the story and players are invited to question them for information. The players who believe they have solved the game may enter their solutions into a drawing of prizes.
