Lehigh

From Free net encyclopedia

Lehigh is a name applied to the Lehigh River in Pennsylvania. The word originates from a Native American word "Lechauwekink", meaning "where there are forks in the stream." Local Pennsylvania Germans changed this to "Lechau", also spelled "Lechaw", "Lechy", or "Lehi".

As with many regional names, it is used in many other names and contexts, such as Lehigh University, the Lehigh Valley region, the Lehigh Gap, and Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. There are also places named Lehigh in Iowa, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
