Lemoore is a city located in Kings County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 19,712.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.9 km² (8.4 mi²). 21.9 km² (8.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 19,712 people, 6,450 households, and 4,927 families residing in the city. The population density was 900.7/km² (2,332.3/mi²). There were 6,823 housing units at an average density of 311.8/km² (807.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 59.29% White, 7.28% African American, 1.59% Native American, 8.37% Asian, 0.33% Pacific Islander, 17.35% from other races, and 5.80% from two or more races. 30.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 6,450 households out of which 48.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 17.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.46.

In the city the population was spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $40,314, and the median income for a family was $44,006. Males had a median income of $34,726 versus $25,759 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,876. 13.4% of the population and 11.4% of families were below the poverty line. 18.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Notable Residents

Rock musician and Journey leader Steve Perry moved to Lemoore as a teenager and began developing his craft while attending high school there.

Track athlete Tommie Smith ran high school track at Lemoore High School before setting a world record in the 200 m at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Smith, along with his teammate John Carlos, is best known for his Black Power salute during the medal ceremony.

Pro Bowl Fullback Lorenzo Neal played for Lemoore High School and Fresno State University. Neal currently plays in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers.
