For other meanings of density, see Density (disambiguation)

Linear density or Linear mass is a measure of mass per unit of length, and it is a characteristic of strings or one-dimensional objects.

The SI unit of linear density is the kilogram per metre (kg/m).

<math>\mu = \frac{m}{L}</math>

where

μ is the linear mass of the string (measured in kilograms per metre)
m is the total mass of the string (measured in kilograms)
L is the total length of the string (measured in metres)
