List of apes

This is a list of apes of encyclopedic interest. It includes individual non-human higher primates (Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, and Orangutans) who are in some way famous or notable.

Note: This list does not include Monkeys, which are related to apes, nor fictional apes (see Related Topics), nor humans (which technically are great apes, but are listed separately).

Ape Actors

• Çarli — Chimp. Starred in the live-action movie The Jungle Book (1994) and in the Turkish television series Çarli before retiring to Monkey World, Dorset, UK.
• Cheeta — chimp; played himself in the Hollywood Tarzan films of the 1930s and 1940s, as well as in the 1967 movie Doctor Dolittle, starring Rex Harrison. As of 2005, Cheeta, born 1932, was in his 70s and the oldest primate aside from man ever recorded. (In the original novels and the 1970s animated series, Tarzan’s sidekick was a monkey named Nikima)
• C.J. (or Manis; sources differ) — orangutan; played Clyde in the Clint Eastwood comedy-adventure films Every Which Way But Loose (1978) and Any Which Way You Can (1980)
• Clair — chimp; played Livingston in the movie Delicatessen (1991)
• Evie — chimp who played robot dog Daggit in the original 1979 Battlestar Galactica television series
• Finster — played Harvey Keitel's pet thief, Dodger in the movie Monkey Trouble
• J. Fred Muggs — chimp "co-host" with Dave Garroway on NBC's Today show in the 1950s
• Mowgli — a chimp guest on CNBC's Dennis Miller Live
• Peggy — chimp; played Bonzo in the 1951 movie comedy Bedtime for Bonzo, starring Ronald Reagan
• 'Project X' ape actors - This 1987 film, a science fiction suspense-drama about military animal experimentation, directed by Jonathan Kapaln, starred Matthew Broderick, Helen Hunt, and a multitude of ape actors:
  • Arthur — chimp; played Winston
  • Clafu — chimp; played Spike
  • Harry — chimp; played Ginger
  • Karanja — chimp; played Goliath
  • Lucy — chimp; played Razzberry
  • Luke — chimp; played Bluebeard
  • Lulu — chimp; played Ethel
  • Mousie — chimp; played New Recruit
  • Okko — chimp; played Goofy
  • Willie — chimp; played Virgil (film's animal star)
• Sam — orangutan; played Dunston in the 1996 movie comedy Dunston Checks In; trained by Larry Madrid
• Zippie — chimp; rollerskater (U.S. television in the 1950s)
• Kwanza (aka Kwan)- gorilla, played "Sidney" in move, "Return To Me" with Minnie Driver & David Ducovney. Kwan currently lives at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.

Ape actors also appeare in the movies Going Ape! ( 1981), Ed (1996), and MVP: Most Valuable Primate(2000). A spider monkey played "Marcel" on early episodes of the U.S. television series Friends.

• Donald - chimpanzee, source of DNA for Chimpanzee genome project
• Enos the Chimp - another spacefaring chimp, after Ham
• Gon - chimpanzee, source of DNA for Chimpanzee genome project
• Frodo - baby killing "bully" chimp who has attacked Jane Goodall and Gary Larson
• Ham the Chimp - spacefaring chimp
• Kanzi - bonobo involved with language research and tool invention; ApeNet language-using great ape ambassador
• Koko - gorilla involved with sign language research and ApeNet language-using great ape ambassador
• Lucy - chimpanzee famous for her use of a vacuum cleaner for personal satisfaction
• Nim Chimpsky - (named after linguist Noam Chomsky)
• Nyota - Bonobo
• Oliver the chimp - the so-called "Missing Link"
• Panzee and Panbanisha - chimpanzee and bonobo at the same research center as Kanzi
• Sultan - chimpanzee
• Washoe - the hand-signing chimp

Zoo Apes

• Jambo - Former resident of Jersey Zoo who cared for a boy who fell into his enclosure.
• Binti Jua - gorilla who saved a human boy
• Colo - first gorilla born in captivity
• Floquet de Neu or Copito de Nieve ("Snowflake"), only albino gorilla known to exist; most famous resident of the Parc Zoològic de Barcelona
• Max - gorilla in the Johannesburg Zoo who famously apprehended a criminal, getting shot in the process.
• Willie B. - gorilla, kept in isolation for decades, became head of a troop and father of five
• Repe - the alpha male in the baboon community of Korkeasaari Zoo, Helsinki

Other Apes

• Bubbles the chimpanzee - pet of entertainer Michael Jackson
