Locke Cole

Template:FFVI character Image:6-locke-a.jpg Locke Cole is a fictional character of the Square Co., Ltd.'s computer role-playing game Final Fantasy VI (Japan) or Final Fantasy III (USA). He is a thief, but to avoid any ill repute he refers to himself as a "treasure hunter."

Locke was in love with a woman from Kohlingen named Rachel. However, during a treasure hunt, Rachel was injured and suffered from amnesia; she later has no idea who Locke is. Because of this, Rachel's father tells Locke to leave and never bother his daughter again. Locke, heartbroken and angry, does so, and during his absence, Kohlingen is attacked by the Empire. Rachel loses her life during the attack, but regains her memory before she dies. Her last word is Locke's name . Locke blames himself for her death and searches for a way of bringing Rachel back to life. Due to this guilt, he vows to protect Terra until her memory returns. When he rescues Celes in South Figaro, he swears to protect her as well. In the World of Ruin, Locke can be found in the Phoenix Cave searching for the legendary Phoenix magicite. He hopes to bring Rachel back to life with it. Because of his past and his actions while playing the game, Locke can be easily be considered a Byronic hero despite the fact the he doesn't have a self-destructive attitude. In addition, he is Edgar's contact with the Returners and introduces Terra to them.
Locke was born on November 24th, making him a Sagittarius.

Steal
Locke's special skill is Steal, which allows him to steal an item from an enemy. Later in the game, the player can equip him with a Thief Glove, which changes his Steal command into Capture. The Capture command steals from an enemy and also attacks it in the process. Later games refer to this attack as Mug.

Trivia
Locke's name may be based on that of John Locke, an English philosopher famous as a proponent of the tabula rasa or the blank slate, the idea that the mind contains no innate ideas.
His name is also a pun in English; Cole is a brand of American lock.
