Long Beach Island

Long Beach Island is a barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean coast of Ocean County, New Jersey in the United States. It is about 18 miles long and half a mile wide at its widest point. It has been continuously settled since 1690; as of the United States 2000 Census, a total of 8,556 people in these six communities called Long Beach Island home.
During the summer months, the island is a hotbed of tourist activity; Many in New Jersey and from the New York / Pennsylvania / Connecticut area own vacation homes referred to as "Beach Houses" that they themselves either summer in or rent out. The island is also known as a base for many long-range recreational fishing and charter boats, whose trips can range from 10-100 miles from one of the islands three inlets (Barnegat, in the north, and Beach Haven and Little Egg in the south.)
