Lurch

From Free net encyclopedia

Lurch is the shambling, groaning, 6'9" tall butler to The Addams Family, who resembles Frankenstein's Monster. He tries to help around the house like any other butler, though occasionally he botches things up due to his great size and strength. Besides a headless doll named Marie, he is the best friend of Wednesday Addams.

Surprisingly, he is often seen playing the harpsichord with a great degree of skill. More surprising still, the scenes in the original television series with Lurch playing the harpsichord featured audio of Ted Cassidy (the actor for Lurch) actually playing a harpsichord, whereas most shows would simpy use an audio track. Gomez or Morticia can summon him with an ever-present rope. When pulled, it produces a loud gong noise that shakes the house, to which Lurch will always instantly respond (generally with the line, "You rang?"). Much of Lurch's history, including his first name or the nature of his relationship to any other Addamses is unknown.

The character of Lurch was played by Ted Cassidy in the show, Carel Struycken in the movies). Lurch did occasionally speak in the show but was totally mute in the movies.

Also the nickname of Richard Harrison, former lock for St Jacques RFC in Guernsey.

On 1965-10-30 a "Lurch dance" song and dance were introduced on an ABC music program [1].

It was stated in Addams Family Reunion that Lurch is part Addams. This plays into his being a Frankenstein's monster-like creature. The only definite body part that is from some dead Addams is his heart.
